4th International Conference on Chemical Monitoring Programme and Crystal Methamphetamine [fr]
On October 28th 2013, H.E. Elisabeth Barbier, Ambassador of France in South Africa, participated in the inauguration of the 4th International Conference on Chemical Monitoring Programme and Crystal Methamphetamine, with General M’Bekela, Deputy National Commissioner.
The conference, prepared jointly by the embassy’s internal security services, in the framework of the priority solidarity fund (FSP) project “Enhlangano”, and South African Police Service’s specialized directions, was held in Cape Town from 28th to 31st October.
This meeting, around the idea “to create a collaborative international partnership with the chemical and pharmaceutical industry”, gave the opportunity for intensive dialogue between the 120 participants, among them the representatives of 15 countries, experts and actors in the fight against the trade and illegal use of these products. Debates were also organized regarding the issue of controlling crystal methamphetamine and the investigations aimed to dismantle clandestine labs.
The participants were satisfied and indicated a willingness to set up a quality cooperation with their counterparts all over the world. Thus, the exchanges helped to elaborate an action plan to promote the share of information and good practices both in a regional and international level (set up of regional courses for example) and to optimize the effectiveness of frontier checks. It has been endorsed by all participants for an effective implementation during the first semester of 2014.
