Ambassador Barbier hosts Take A Girl Child to Work Day

On Friday 27 May 2016, Ambassador of France to South Africa, HE Elisabeth Barbier, hosted six pupils from Setumo-Khiba Secondary School in Mabopane for Take a Girl Child to Work Day.

The Grade 11 and 12 pupils were invited by the Embassy team, with the support of NGO Lesedi la Batho, with the aim to show them how an Embassy works, what an Ambassador does, how France and South Africa interact on different levels, how France is involved in South Africa and how important learning the French language is.

The girls spent the morning at the Embassy, learning about the importance of women in diplomacy, before taking a French lesson at the Alliance Française of Pretoria in Sunnyside. They were also introduced to the possibility of studying in France and their day ended with a tour of the Ambassador’s Residence.

In France, women are in a numerical majority within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In January 2013, women accounted for 53% of established civil servants at the Ministry.
