Ambassador Farnaud and the French business community meet City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba

On Tuesday 21 November 2017, Ambassador of France to South Africa, H.E. Mr Christophe Farnaud, and Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Herman Mashaba, hosted meetings between the French business community and senior officials from the City of Johannesburg.

Councillor Mashaba provided an overview of his first year in office and highlighted strategic opportunities for future partnerships.

Discussions took place between municipal officials and French companies in the following fields:

  • Water, energy and waste management
  • Urban planning, transport and housing
  • Investment opportunities and employment creation

There are 370 French companies and subsidiaries in South Africa with excellent reputations for providing quality products and services in different areas (from engineering, manufacturing and construction to energy and transport, from tourism and health care to financial and business services) to municipalities. Many of these are based in Johannesburg and are committed to local employment and skills development alongside their South African partners.

The French business community is also committed to improving infrastructure and sustainable development in cities such as Johannesburg. The Gautrain is operated by RATP Dev through the Bombela Operating Company – a tangible example of strong French-South African business cooperation.

New investment opportunities are undertaken in Johannesburg on a regular basis, such as the opening of French retail stores (Decathlon, Roche Bobois and Leroy Merlin).

In addition to several French companies based in Johannesburg, the French Development Agency (AFD) works closely with the City of Johannesburg in the fields of special transformation and transport development. In addition to loan funding and joint research programmes, AFD has supported the cities of Paris and Johannesburg in their climate change strategy.

Furthermore, Johannesburg and Lille European Metropole cooperate on inner city regeneration and project implementation capacity building.
