Coronavirus Global Response - worldwide pledging marathon
The European Union is joining forces with global partners to kick-start the Coronavirus Global Response pledging effort.
An online pledging conference on Monday, 4 May 2020, will aim to raise €7.5 billion in initial funding to kick-start the global cooperation to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
This follows the launch of a new programme, the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator or or ACT Accelerator, which is a collaboration between the World Health Organisation, governments and non-profit organisations.
The worldwide pledging marathon was announced at the launch on the 24th of April, which saw the participation of Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates.
French President Emmanuel Macron said: «In order to win the fight against the virus, we must support all systems, and in particular vulnerable health care systems, to fight against all pandemics and in particular Covid-19 ».
On Monday, governments and business leaders will announce their pledges for the fight against the coronavirus, which will go towards ramping up the development of diagnostics, therapeutics and treatments.
