Four South-African ranked among world’s best according to Shanghai ranking [fr]

The Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2018 was published this Wednesday, August 15th. Four South African universities are among the Top 500 best universities in the world.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as Shanghai Ranking, is published on an annual basis. Universities are assessed according to six criteria, among which the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science and the citation index of referenced publications.

South Africa, leader of Africa’s higher education system

Again this year, South Africa dominates the top of African’s best universities, alongside Cairo University, the only other university on the continent to be ranked in the Top 500.
The University of Pretoria enters the ranking, while the universities of Witwatersrand, Cape Town and Stellenbosch maintain their places in the Top 500.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal, which was in the ranking since 2003, drops off the TOP 500.

An extended list for a Top 1000

For the first time this year, the Shanghai Ranking is extended to cover all universities ranked in the top 1,000.
In total, 9 African universities appear in this extended list, among which 4 South African, 4 Egyptian and one Ungandan.
The Universities of KwaZulu-Natal and of Johannesburg, drop off from the TOP 500 ranking to 501-600 range for the first and 601-700 range for the second university.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) remains in the same category (701-800 range) whereas North-West University drops one position in the ranking, from 601-700 to 701-800.
