French School in Cape Town [fr]
The French School of Cape Town is named after François le Vaillant, a tribute to the French explorer who visited South Africa and pushed for a more open-minded and more innovating teaching method.
Close to the town centre, to the Parliament and to the French Consulate General, the French School (l’École Française du Cap) is registered with the network “l’Agence pour l’Enseignement français à l’Étranger (AEFE)” (A public agency dealing with French education in non-French territories and countries).
The school caters for children aged 2 up to Grade 12 in high school. The total number of students is 270, divided into four pre-school levels (or “sections”), five primary school levels; and seven different levels from Grade 6 until Grade 12 (“Terminale”).
Everyone from Primary and Secondary school follow English tuition to prepare them for the Cambridge University exams. Passing one of these diplomas ensures that the student receives international acknowledgement for his English skills, which will, if needed, allow him to integrate various international schools or universities for further study. Sustained English tuition also allows for deeper exposure to South Africa, its culture and its environment. The goal of the French School is to have students succeed in both languages, allowing them to carry on with whichever system they choose.
For its secondary teaching, the French School of Cape Town uses “CNED”, a public organisation supervised by the French Ministry of Education, which is responsible for the curriculum contents, the legal requirements from the Ministry, the assessment and the career options decisions for students. However, the students go to classes where they have lecturers in every subject. The school is currently busy getting registered with the French Ministry of Education to do without CNED from September 2013 on, for Grade 6 and 7 (called 6ème et 5ème)
