French delegation visits Eastern Cape [fr]

Ambassador of France to South Africa HE Elisabeth Barbier and a delegation representing France in South Africa visited the Eastern Cape, specifically Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas, between 18 and 21 April 2016.

The purpose of the visit was to promote France’s activities, both in South Africa and in the Eastern Cape, and to interact with stakeholders and officials on local and provincial level about opportunities in the region.

As part of the visit, Ambassador Barbier and the delegation visited, among others, the Nelson Mandela Business Chamber, the Coega Development Corporation, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the Faurecia Emissions Control Technologies factory, the Dedisa peaking power plant, the University of Fort Hare and the Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre (in East London). She also met high-ranking officials of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, as well as several business leaders.

On 19 April, Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Danny Jordaan, and members of the French community were invited to board the French Navy Ship Le Floréal that paid a courtesy call to Port Elizabeth from 18 to 23 April 2016. On this occasion, Ambassador Barbier bestowed on Honourary Consul in Port Elizabeth, Gérald Henderson, French Nationality for his commitment to his duties.

On 20 April, Ambassador Barbier officially opened the first ever French Food and Culture Day at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The event aimed to highlight Franco-South African scientific collaboration and promoting future cooperation as well as expanding on the already extensive academic ties between France and South Africa.

In addition, Ambassador Barbier on 20 April 2016 opened an art exhibition by 2013 Gerard Sekoto Award recipient Mongezi Ncaphayi entitled Spirit’s Response at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Art Gallery in Bird Street. His first solo exhibition will run until 13 May.

During her visit to the University of Fort Hare, Ambassador Barbier visited the French South-African Institute of Agriculture (F’SAGRI).
