French for Business in Africa Forum 2015 [fr]
The Embassy of France in South Africa hosted a forum on French language use for professional purposes in Africa in April 2015 in three major South African cities. The event took place in Johannesburg on April 15, Durban on April 16 and Cape Town on April 17.
The forum brought together business representatives, international cooperation representatives and professionals in the field of education to discuss French as a language of employment in Africa.
Three round table discussions around different themes took place in each city and were facilitated by well-known author and radio presenter Victor Kgomoeswana. The first round table discussion was entitled: The economic relations between South Africa and French-speaking Africa. The second round table was called French and employability and the third was entitled Training and certification in professional French.
More than 380 people attended the Forum across the country.
French Ambassador to South Africa HE Elisabeth Barbier attended the events in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In Johannesburg she was joined by the Deputy Director General of the South African Department of Basic Education Mr HM Mweli. Logie Naidoo, speaker for the eThekwini Municipality, opened the forum in Durban.
Two memorandums of understanding were signed during the Forum:
In Durban, between the Coastal KZN TVET College, the CIEP (Centre International d’Etudes pédagogiques) in Reunion Island and the Board of Education of Reunion Island. The agreement covers a multi-year exchange program between TVET Coastal KZN College students and a vocational training school in Reunion Island, including internships to build professional skills and immersion language courses.
In Cape Town, between the French Embassy and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). This agreement provides for the opening of a French course for university students, especially in Hospitality / Food and Tourism sectors.
