Lycée Jules Verne Johannesburg - JPEG Lycée Jules Verne is a French school registered with the French Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE). It was founded in 1992 and currently educates over 900 students from over 50 nationalities from nursery school through to grade 12 (Terminale) at the end of which the French Baccalauréat is taken (three cycles of specialization in one field offered: Literature, Economics, or Science).

The school has two campuses: the Johannesburg campus hosts students from the nursery year (petite section, grade 000) through to 12th grade and the Pretoria campus hosts students from the nursery year through to 5th grade (90 students for the 2013-2014 school year).

Teaching is strictly in line with the French curriculum. In this framework, the Lycée Jules Verne promotes the values of the French educational system.

Lycée Jules Verne in Pretoria

Lycée Jules Verne Pretoria - JPEG Opened in 2001 in the Willows neighborhood (East Pretoria), the campus moved on June 2013 to a strategic new location in the Arcadia neighborhood in the center of Pretoria. As a result of this move, the new campus benefits from a very nice and fully renovated building located in the heart of the embassy district. The students will therefore benefit from a modern environment which will be up to the high academic standards of our education system.

The curriculum is identical to the one offered in Johannesburg and teaching is bilingual as well. At the end of grade 5, students continue their curriculum (middle and high school) at the Lycée Jules Verne in Johannesburg.

  • Bilingual classes in the Pre- and Primary School:

The Lycée Jules Verne embarked on equal-schedule French-English bilingual education in 2007 and has been developing it ever since. Students are taught alternatively by a French-speaking- and an English-speaking teacher. The rotation occurs per day or per half-day, depending on the grade. The guidelines of the French curricula are followed both in English and French. All pre- and primary classes will benefit from this bilingual teaching at the start of the 2013-2014 school year.

  • In Middle and High school:

English teaching is more advanced than in the traditional French curriculum, as students are divided into groups according to their specific task-based language skills.

In addition, an International Option of the Baccalaureate, American Section, is offered to students from Grade 6th since September 2012. Students take 4 hours of language and English literature in addition to their usual English teaching. The History-Geography teaching is provided by 2 teachers who work together and teach 2 hours in each language alternatively. In June 2014, the first students will take the French Baccalaureate with the International American Option.

Since September 2013, the 6th Grade students who don’t want to follow the International option of the Baccalaureate, join a bi-language program. They take English teaching according to their specific task-based language skills. In addition, they benefit from one hour of mathematics taught in English and one hour of literature and English civilization in English. In addition, they choose a second language, German or Spanish, from the 6th Grade onwards.

  • Cambridge certifications:

Last but not least, the Lycée Jules Verne has introduced English language certifications. These certifications are for students (and teachers), in partnership with the IH CENTER, the local correspondent of Cambridge University. These certifications allow for easier access to universities and tertiary institutions in English-speaking countries.
