IDAHOT 2020 webinar: “Overcoming the Struggles of LGBTI Communities”

On Friday 22 May, the Embassy of France to South Africa, the Gay & Lesbian Network (GLN) and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) hosted a webinar on "Overcoming the Struggles of LGBTI Communities".

The webinar formed part of the IDAHOT 2020 Digital Series, a series of webinars hosted by the embassies of France, Sweden, Ireland, the General Representation of the Government of Flanders and the Delegation of the European union to South Africa, in celebration of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia - IDAHOT.

The IDAHOT 2020 theme is “Breaking the silence”, and calls on everyone to speak up, to share their stories, to raise their voices and to claim their right to be heard. Breaking the silence has become even more crucial in the context of the COVID-19 lockdown, as confinement to our homes and other restrictions put our physical and mental wellbeing at risk, whilst physical distancing makes the usual support networks less readily available.

The web discussion was moderated by Bafana Sithole and featured speakers from the Gay & Lesbian Network (GLN), namely Anthony Waldhausen (Director), Tracey Sibisi (Programme Coordinator), Sphelele Nwumalo (Programme Coordinator) and Londeka Ngubane (QPR Reporter). They talked about the lived LGBTIQ+ experiences in rural KwaZulu-Natal, and discussed what ‘Breaking the Silence’ entails for themgiven the COVID-19 situation.
