The French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD)

The French National Institute of Research for Sustainable Development is a French public institution under the joint supervision of the Ministries of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and Europe and Foreign Affairs.

PNGThe multidisciplinary organization is recognised internationally, mainly working in partnership with the Mediterranean and intertropical countries.

Through its network and its presence in some fifty countries, it carries an original approach to research, expertise, training and sharing of knowledge for the benefit of territories and countries that make science and innovation one of the first levels of their development.

Two researchers are now assigned in South Africa and about 100 scientific missions take place each year for a total of about 1,500 days (4 FTEs).

The main areas of IRD collaboration with South African institutions are marine sciences, malaria control in the north of the country and agroecology.
