International Conference : Cuba&Africa - Engagements, Circulations and Racial Representations in the 20th Century

The French Institute of South Africa(IFAS), the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) and the Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA) convened an international conference on the relations established between Cuba and several African countries during the 20th century.

The objective of this first meeting was to measure the scale of a multifaceted Cuban engagement in Africa : military, medical, as well as in training and cultural cooperation. Gathering scholars from three continents and open to the public, the conference took place at the Institute for Humanities in Africa, at the University of Cape Town, on May 23 and 24 2016. We are grateful to the Foundation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH), the French Centre for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE) and the Institut Français for their support to this conference.
