International Human Rights Day celebration at the Alliance Française Pretoria

On Wednesday 9 December 2015, the Embassy of France to South Africa, Lawyers for Human Rights and the Alliance Française of Pretoria organized a screening of three short documentaries on the topic of human rights, followed by a debate with film makers and human rights activists.

In 2015, Human Rights Day is devoted to the launch of a year-long campaign for the 50th anniversary of the two International Covenants on Human Rights: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 December 1966.

This year, the French Embassy in South Africa, Lawyers for Human Rights and the Alliance Française of Pretoria celebrated International Human Rights Day through the work of South African human rights activists focused on refugee and migrant rights.

These three documentaries provide a snapshot of the work of Lawyers for Human Rights - an organisation active in South Africa for more than 36 years. Their project Mobile Information Suite Service for Refugee and Migrant Workers is currently funded by the Embassy of France in South Africa and aims to increase refugee access to protection and assistance services through enhanced information dissemination and the expansion of legal assistance and counselling to refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa.

Ambassador Barbier said: “We are celebrating our human diversity, freedom and dignity".
