Launch of the AI Incubation Programme

In collaboration with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), the Embassies of France and Switzerland are establishing an AI Incubation Programme in 2021. The AI Incubation Programme will be implemented in partnership withTshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and the Cape Innovation & Technology Initiative.

The COVID-19 health crisis has changed our lives and brought digital technology to the heart of our everyday actions, resulting in a world that has leapfrogged into a life of digitalisation.

Both Switzerland and France recognise the use of digitilisation in a range of fields, from health to finance, education, agri-food, democracy and humanitarian aid, as well as in governance and the indus-trial sector.
AI companies benefit from conducive conditions around education, research, and innovation that provide a robust framework to take science to market. While South Africa is rich in knowledge and research, it is rarely practically applied to the real world in order to make a difference.

This programme creates the opportunity for knowledge to be applied to real-world problem solving, with entrepreneurial opportunities as a mechanism. It is an opportunity to use our combined networks as partners to grow the AI community beyond South Africa into the continent. It is only through the instruments of international collaboration that the objectives of innovation for global good and societal benefits can be achieved.

Thus, through an intense three-month programme, the partners want to support students and university researchers to commercialise their research. The goal is to help companies develop university-derived AI innovations in collaboration with funders.

TIA is excited to be part of this programme it shows our commitment in supporting technology enter-prise development through skills and acceleration platforms within the National System of Innovation (NSI).

Fifteen postgraduate students and faculty researchers will be selected from South African universities to participate in this programme. This will allow further endeavors to harness support for the most innovative companies that successfully pass the due diligence stage of the funding process.

The official launch of the AI Incubation Programme is set to take place on Thursday, 26 August 2021. In addition, there will be an announcement of the joint initiative at the Africa AI Expo 2021.
