Launch of the Francophonie Festival
The launch of the Francophonie Festival, on Saturday 15 March 2014, was a great success. Thanks to some beautiful weather, the numerous visitors enjoyed joining stands held by French-speaking countries from all over the world and major organisations.
In her opening speech, Ambassador Barbier highlighted the close relations between DIRCO and the Alliance Française network helping south-african diplomats to learn French. The launch of the E-learning French language programme, on March 14th, will give many senior officials the opportunity to to follow a beginner’s French course.
After the opening speeches by Ambassador Barbier, Ambassador Thami Ngwevela from DIRCO, and the Ambassador of Senegal, the visitors were free to go from booth to booth to taste biscuits from Canada, food specialities from West Africa, traditionnal pastries from Tunisia, pastis from France, waffles and beer from Belgium and much more. On the main stage, dancers, musicians and singers performed colorful shows.
At the end of the day, Switzerland presented the music group "Les frères Souchet".
As President Abou Diouf (Secretary-General of the Organisation of Francophonie) reminds us, Francophonie is to invest ourselves relentlessly in order that French language stays the language of creation, research, innovation, information, employment, and the official and work language in international organisations.
