Passing of Mr. David Goldblatt
Message from the Ambassador of France to South Africa, H.E. Mr. Christophe Farnaud.
It is with deep regret that I have received the sad news of the passing of Mr David Goldblatt, South Africa’s iconic documentary photographer.
I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family for this great loss.
Globally known, respected and acclaimed for his work, David Goldblatt devoted his career to observe and document his country for over 60 years.
David Goldblatt had strong links with France. In 2016, he was awarded « Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres » (Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters), France’s top cultural award by the Embassy of France to South Africa.
An exhibition with a selection of his most prominent work has recently been held at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris to acknowledge his contribution to the world of photography.
Only last May, I was honored by his presence at the Alliance Française in Johannesburg to open an exhibition. The exhibition was his personal selection of work from photographers he admires, called ‘Five photographers: a tribute to David Goldblatt’. This highlighted the fruitful artistic cooperation between France and South Africa.
His critical explorations of South African society through art as well as his contribution to photography in South Africa and beyond will be greatly missed.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
H.E. Ambassador Christophe Farnaud
