Syria – Fight against terrorism/conversation between M. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic, and Mr Riyad Hijab, General Coordinator of the Syrian High Negotiations Committee (HNC) – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, 5 July 2017
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke today, Tuesday 4 July, to Riyad Hijab, General Coordinator of the Syrian High Negotiations Committee (HNC). He confirmed to him France’s support for the Syrian opposition represented by the HNC in the inter-Syrian talks taking place under the aegis of the United Nations.
The President assured Mr Hijab of his determination to commit himself fully and personally to achieving an inclusive political solution in the Geneva Process framework. He reviewed his discussions with the leaders of the countries engaged in the region, particularly the United States and Russia, with a view to securing a genuine reduction in violence and an alleviation of the Syrian people’s suffering, which has lasted too long.
This was the purpose of the two clearly-spelt-out red lines on the use of chemical weapons and humanitarian access. The President particularly stressed the priority France attaches to improving the aid provided for civilians.
Finally, the President and Mr Hijab reiterated their appeal to protect Syria’s unity and the need to fight Daesh [so-called ISIL] and [other] terrorist groups. President Emmanuel Macron expressed his wish to keep in close contact with Mr Hijab in order to support the Syrian people’s legitimate aspirations./.
