Proparco celebrates 40 years

On 26 October 2017, Proparco, the French Development Agency’s private sector arm celebrated 40 years of action in the private sector and in the field of sustainable development.

The celebration took place in Johannesburg in the presence of Ambassador of France to South Africa, H.E. Mr. Christophe Farnaud, Jean-Pierre Dalais CEO of CIEL a Mauritius-based diversified investment group, Jean-François Marco COO of Meridiam Africa and Amaury Mulliez, Deputy CEO of Proparco.

Proparco is the French Development Agency’s private sector arm has strongly supported the banking sector and financial intermediation in South Africa, helping small and medium-sized business gain access to long-term financing. In addition, Proparco has financed renewable energy projects since 2012, investing nearly 300 million euros in South Africa over the past decade.


Ambassador Farnaud delivered a speech during the celebrations and highlighted the importance for the private sector to take initiatives and create the jobs that are needed everywhere.

Jean-Pierre Dalais, Jean-Pierre Marco and Amaury Mulliez spoke about the importance of their projects. The leadership of Ciel and Meridiam has resulted in the construction of hospitals and solar power plants that are now seen as references in Africa. Their projects, supported by Proparco, have created numerous jobs and increased access to healthcare and electricity.


This event was the occasion to reiterate France’s commitment to providing assistance to the private sector and to bringing sustainable economic, social and environmental benefits to the African continent.
