RFI - The Broken Talisman
Translation of a radio show in Sesotho
An education adviser from Radio France International (RFI), a French radio channel for international news, visited South Africa and Lesotho in November 2013 with the idea of launching the Sesotho adaptation of a radio show called “The Broken talisman”.
The original concept of this program, whose main character, a South-African, finds himself in a linguistic survival situation when he is immerged in a French-speaking African country, has already attracted a wide audience. The listener follows the adventure from the hero’s point of view, who thinks aloud in his own language, which has to be the same as the listener’s. With him, the listener observes, listens and decodes French language as a combination of communication tools to progress in the story. The program is currently broadcasted every week on RFI in an English/French version (every Saturday at 9am on FM96.5 in Lesotho).
The program is also already available in Portuguese and Kiswahili. The coming versions in isiZulu and Sesotho are currently under production in South Africa and Lesotho, thanks to the support of the cooperation for French language and the help of the Alliance Française network.
In Lesotho, the project is driven by the Alliance Française of Maseru. The program has been translated into Sesotho by two students learning French at the Lesotho National University, Ms Polo Lemphane and Mr Sekoai Nkhi, under the supervision of their professor, Mr Mosisili Sebotsa, a graduate of Strasbourg University. Studio recording will start with the participation of RFI’s technicians as soon as interpreters have been recruited. Radio Lesotho has confirmed its interest in broadcasting the program as soon as it is ready.
The visit of the educative adviser from RFI gave the opportunity to present the RFI tools aimed to French learning to all the French teachers. RFI offers a whole range of programs and activities for students as well as teachers, all available for free on RFI’s “French language” website.
