South African Thatho Kgatlhanye wins the ELLE Impact2 International Award
The 5th ELLE Impact2 International Awards ceremony, hosted by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hildago took place at the Hotel de Ville in Paris on 7th April 2016, where South African, Thato Kgatlhanye was awarded the final grand prize.
Mobilising students with tools to succeed, Thato is the founder of Rethaka Trading which manufactures Repurpose Schoolbags, the solar-powered backpacks, made from recycled plastic. These innovative bags charge on a child’s walk to and from school, later transforming into a light to enable them to finish homework and study at night.
Kgatlhanye competed against 8 contestants, chosen by 8 other international editions of ELLE who partnered with investment firm Le Comptoir de l’Innovation for this initiative to promote women entrepreneurs. Each of the editions held a local competition to award one woman-led business or a business dedicated to female empowerment.
Kgatlhanye was selected on February 26th 2016 to represent the country on April 6th 2016 in Paris at ELLE’s Headquarters. She competed against some of the brightest minds and ideas across the world, but was ultimately chosen for her originality, relevance and social impact.
