The Defence Attaché Section
The Defence Attaché Section consists of a team of one senior officer and one senior non-commissioned officer from the Army and Air Force. It also takes on civilian or military interns on an ad-hoc basis. The Defence Attaché Office in Pretoria has a regional responsibility as well as well as it covers the defence relations with Botswana and Kingdom of Lesotho.
It is in charge of:
representing the French Armed Forces and all institutions of the French Ministry of Defence as well as the Directorate for Military and Security Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs with the authorities of the South African Ministry of Defence;
informing the French authorities on all defence-related questions ;
encouraging operational co-operation between the services of the two countries through the organisation of bilateral training exercises, mainly for peacekeeping in Africa;
enhancing ties and encouraging the understanding of defence policies through the organisation of visits by French authorities to South Africa and South African authorities to France;
organising training co-operation through teaching French Language and participation in courses organised in France or in African military schools;
developing relations between defence industries of the two countries, exchanges in the field of defence technologies and to encourage exchanges and coordination between the two countries’ armament agencies.
