The Frigate Floreal to visit Cape Town
11 – 16 April 2012
The Frigate Floreal of the French Navy will stop in Cape Town from 11 to 16 April 2012 as part of the French participation in the 3rd Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS). Floreal is stationed at La Reunion island and is fitted with a panther helicopter for surveillance missions. It has a crew of 103 men and women. The visit to Cape Town is a reinforcement of Franco-South African cooperation against piracy in the Indian Ocean. The Floreal will be harboured at the V&A Waterfront while in Cape Town.
The 3rd IONS will this year focus on regional maritime security initiatives and will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 11 – 13 April 2012. The importance of regional cooperation in tackling the shared security threats in the Indian Ocean is well recognised and events such as IONS are essential in modern Naval strategy.
French Ambassador to South Africa Jacques Lapouge will visit the Floreal during it’s time in Cape Town.
