"The Miser" wins at the Naledi Theatre Awards (5 April 2013)

Molière’s play The Miser which was translated and directed by Sylvaine Strike within the framework of the French Season in South Africa in 2012, received the Best Production of a Play award at the 10th Annual Naledi Theatre Awards.

In addition, the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role went to Patricia Boyer (The Miser), the award for Best Costume Design went to Sarah Roberts (The Miser), and the award for Best Director of a Play or Musical went to Sylvaine Strike (The Miser) from the Fortune Cookie Theatre Company. In total, The Miser which was produced at the Market Theatre within the framework of the French Season in South Africa in 2012, received four Naledi awards and, as such, became the play of the year. The awards ceremony took place on the 18th of March 2013 at Gold Reef City, in front of several hundred guests from the world of the arts and the media.

This consecration crowns a unanimous popular success since the play, which was performed for six weeks in Johannesburg from the 25th of October to the 9th of December 2012, was often fully booked during the matinées by schools, and the rest of the time by an enthusiastic public enthralled by such asharp and efficient adaptation.
Sylvaine Strike’s translation used a lively and modern English register, while maintaining the subtleties of classic French. The cast was led by Shakespearian actor Lionel Newton and included MphoOsei-Tutu, AtandwaKani, Kate Liquorish and William Harding (who trained in France). The sets were sober and well thought out. The period costumes were modernised in a clever way. Altogether, the play was a great success ; it received wide acclaim already after the Première and was the year’s commercial success according to the Market Theatre managers.

The French Embassy in South Africa congratulates the Fortune Cookie Theatre Company for carrying out this magnificent project onto the stage, and would like to thank the cast and public alike.
