The fifth edition of the 2 Hemispheres tournamement
The Two Hemispheres Tournament
The fifth edition of the "two hemispheres tournament" will take place from 28 March to 7 April 2013 in Johannesburg and Pretoria. This tournament brings together some of the best U20 rugby teams from France and South Africa. This year, the Lions and Raiders of Johannesburg and the Pretoria Blue Bulls will meet three French teams from the regions of Languedoc, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Rhône-Alpes. This tournament brings together some of the rising stars of French and South African rugby and several young players from the Top 14 (the French first division) have participated in the tournament in the past.
This tournament is organized every year by the Jules Verne French School Johannesburg with the support of the Franco-South African Chamber of Commerce, French companies (Renault, Danone, Nestlé, Total and Danone), l’Agence pour l’enseignement français à l’étranger (Agency for French education abroad) and the French Rugby Federation. For the second year, the tournament will also gather "junior" players from 7 to 15 years from six African countries (Gabon, Morocco, Congo, Kenya, Benin and Guinea Conakry) who will play the Raiders junior team and the team from the Jules Verne French School.
The tournament is a great opportunity to create links between our two countries, not only in sports but also on its human aspect : several cultural visits are organized for the players and it will highlight the partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

Rugby in France first emerged in 1872, introduced by a group of English merchants. The first French championship was held in 1892. Today, rugby is a very popular (with 450 000 registered players) sport in France and participation grows every year. The national rugby union teams of France and South Africa (the Springboks) have been playing each other in Test rugby since 1913. Their first meeting, held in Bordeaux, was on 11 January 1913, and was won 38-5 by South Africa. In the 38 matches the two nations have played since then, SA have won 21, France 11 and 6 have been drawn.
