The first Leroy Merlin in South Africa has opened
On Thursday 27 September 2018, Ambassador Farnaud inaugurated the first Leroy Merlin hardware megastore in South Africa, in Johannesburg. It was also the first Leroy Merlin megastore in the African continent.
The opening of Leroy Merlin megastores in South Africa is a major contribution to the President Cyril Ramaphosa’s $100B investment call. Despite a competitive retail sector, Leroy Merlin chose to settle and to commit durably in South Africa, illustrating the global dynamism of French investments and commitment in South Africa.
Through this project, Leroy Merlin is contributing significantly to local job creation for the province and plan to reproduce it at the country level. Leroy Merlin is also committed to support skills development and know-how transfer, through its active partnership with Kandua, which helps informal workers to transition to formal jobs and to become entrepreneurs.
Three others Leroy Merlin stores are planned to open in 2019-2020. The goal is to create more than 800 jobs in Johannesburg’s area.
