French Schools in South Africa [fr]
South Africa has numerous schools which offer French as a second or third language and French is also taught at many universities. There are two French schools in South Africa with campuses in Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg that offer prospective students an opportunity to learn French and other languages at top rated institutions following the French national education programme. Since being founded, the schools have attracted thousands of learners keen to receive a high-quality bilingual education.
French School of Cape Town
The French School of Cape Town is named after François le Vaillant, a tribute to the French explorer who visited South Africa and pushed for a more open-minded and more innovating teaching method.
The French School in Cape Town is a member of the Agence pour l’Enseignement Français à l’Etranger (AEFE) network which represents 566 schools in 138 countries. The AEFE is a national public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One of its roles is to ensure the quality of schools teaching the French national education programme outside France.
Since the start of the 2014-2015 school year, the French School in Cape Town is organised on its two sites. One is located on Kings Road, the Sea Point campus renamed ’Ecole Française du Cap’ and accommodates around 250 kindergarten and primary students. The second site on Hope Street, the Gardens campus, is called ’Lycée Français du Cap’ and accommodates over 100 middle and high school students.
Since January 2022, the primary school has obtained certification for its British international section, validating the bilingual education that has been in place for several years. The collège and the lycée are awaiting a response for the same certification, leading to the French International Baccalaureate
Finally, for the first time in June 2023, the lycée will be an official examination centre for the Baccalauréat (1ère and Terminale), having previously been an examination centre only for the Diplôme National du Brevet.
Regardless of the age of the students, the distribution of the lessons gives 20 to 35% of the time to English, allowing the students to achieve bilingualism and biculturalism.
Despite the physical organisation of the school on two sites, it is a single, close-knit and integrated teaching team of high quality that is available to the students. This team is ready to respond to their needs and to contribute to bringing them the best: the guarantee of a solid, rich education, open to the world, in the image of the original philosophy of the founders of the ’Lycée Français du Cap’.

The International Option of the Baccalaureate is one of the French ‘general’ baccalaureates with an additional international option. The American Option was introduced to the Lycee Jules Verne in 2012 for the Grade 11 and 12 students for Scientific and Economic sections. It is the first American Option to be instituted in the entire continent of Africa and further enables candidates to obtain a level of English similar to that of AP (Advanced Placement) programs in Language and Literature and in History-Geography. In France and abroad there are 24 other options implemented in high schools to offer the same opportunities.
In line with the school project focus area “language proficiency” the French school introduced language certifications for students and teachers. The school offers certifications in English (Cambridge Certifications), German and French. These certifications allow to evaluate the school language policy.
